Ancient and all-but-forgotten techniques like tranchage set Hoot + Howl apart

Golden, Colo., July 30, 2025 – Based in Golden, the newest Colorado distillery Hoot + Howl Spirits is reviving long-lost techniques and reimagining recipes with exceptional ingredients. A passion project led by Founder Callan Deline and Head Distiller Chris Ritenour, Hoot + Howl is introducing modern spirits lovers to the previously forgotten processes of the past.

Here’s a brief explanation of historical processes uncovered by Hoot + Howl’s unconventional approach:

Double distillation – A deliberate (and time-consuming) two-step process of distillation that Hoot + Howl uses for its Gin and Liqueurs. Unlike single distillation or column still methods, double distillation meticulously refines the spirit, which results in a softer, mellower, more nuanced flavor profile.

When asked if the time of double distillation is worth it, Deline said: “Definitely. Double distillation allows the intricate botanicals to shine. Originally, we were not planning to develop a Black Tea Liqueur, but as our botanical library grew, the flavors came together naturally. We have researched and tested every element of our spirits and botanicals, from the ingredients to the distillation processes for a smooth, deeply complex drinking experience.”

Tranchage – This distillation technique doesn’t exist on Google, it’s only in the history books. A rare mellowing process, tranchage allows the spirit to rest a third time in the still “at temperature” for nearly 24 hours. That temperature, as it was when the process was most used, is tested by hand. As the spirit naturally cools, this process deeply enhances flavor and complexity, imparting levels of softness and delicacy usually found in a much more mature spirit.

“After double distillation, we put our liqueurs, including Black Tea Liqueur and Triple Sec, through tranchage. We’ve tested several techniques but this process leaves the smoothest finish,” said Deline.

Raising the Barrel – This seldom-practiced, traditional American technique is borrowed from brandy-making and used to craft Hoot + Howl bourbon. Viewing the spirit as a dynamic entity, Raising the Barrel involves progressive blends, controlled warehouse conditions, and careful proof adjustments during maturation, actively shepherding the spirit to achieve its highest potential.

Hoot + Howl is breathing new life into long-lost spirits-making traditions to create joyful modern-day spirits, including gin, vodka, Armagnac-finished bourbon, Black Tea Liqueur, Triple Sec, and more. Let your tastebuds travel back in time when you find Hoot + Howl at a Colorado watering hole near you.
